Red Crochet Shawl

A while back, I shared a free pattern for a Granny Square Cardigan on my YouTube. I used a red acrylic yarn for that project, and wildly overestimated the amount needed. I had an entire ball of yarn left over. That equals 1200 meters. To use that up, I made a simple shawl.

I used a two-row repeat on this crochet shawl to create a ridged surface. The process of making this one is super simple, even a bit tedious. The result, however, is soft, snuggly, and pretty cute.

I made a small video on how to create this red crochet shawl. Since video tutorials aren’t all that easy to follow, I’ll write the pattern down here, and also add helpful charts.

How To Crochet Red Shawl

Yarn: I used We Love Yarn MegaBall by Hobbii and a 5mm hook

Chain four, join to form a circle

Chain four

Into the circle, triple crochet three times, chain one, and triple crochet four times.

*  Chain four.

Work an increase: Triple crochet twice in between first stitches.

Chain one.

Triple crochet around the stem of the first stitch, chain one and repeat until you reach the one chain space in the middle. Work two triple crochets, a chain stitch, and two triple crochets into that stitch.

Chain one, and continue to triple crochet around the stem of each triple crochet.

Work an increase: triple crochet three times into the space between the last two stitches.

Chain four.

Work an increase: triple crochet two times into the space between first stitches.

Chain one, triple crochet into each triple crochet.

Once you reach the chain stitch in the middle, work two triple crochet, a chain stitch, and two triple crochet into that stitch.

Continue to chain one and triple crochet into each triple crochet until you reach the corner.

Work an increase: triple crochet three times in the space between the last two stitches. *

Repeat * * until your shawl is large enough.

Finish with a picot border.

Chain one to turn to work on the ridged side. Single crochet at the base of the first stitch. Double crochet in between stitches, and triple crochet into the first triple crochet. Double crochet in the space between, and single crochet into the next triple crochet. This forms a cute picot. Repeat through the row until you reach the middle increase.

Into the increase stitches, double crochet and triple crochet. Quadruple crochet into the middle stitch. Triple crochet and double crochet into the remaining stitches, and continue the established picot pattern until you reach the other corner.

Chain one, and turn to work on the long edge. Single crochet three times into each stitch. Cast off, and weave in ends.

You’ll find a chart and legend below. Creating a triangular crochet chart was beyond my timeframe, so I cut corners. This works a bit different to ordinary charts, so. Crochet one row at a time while keeping in mind that the stitches inside purple boxes are increases worked in a single stitch. I do hope the flat version is at least a bit helpful!

Hop on over to my YouTube for a video of the shawl. I plan to post a dress-up video at some point to show you how to wear the crochet shawl.

Love,

Heather
