Keyhole Scarf

Last winter, I got fed up with scarfs that refuse to stay put. Around the same time, I also felt a touch too cold indoors. To solve both problems at once, I designed the simplest Keyhole Scarf. This quickly became my favorite thing to wear and today, I wanted to share a free pattern with you.

I used a left-over acrylic yarn for my Keyhole Scarf. I think this is MegaBall by We Love Yarn. The recommended needle size for this yarn is 4,5mm, but I picked out needles size 5 mm to make the knit fabric soft and stretchy. I used about 180 grams of yarn for this.

Onto needles size 5mm, cast on 60 stitches. Knit all stitches on both sides of the work until your work is 40 cm long. Now it’s time to work in the keyhole.

Knit 22 stitches, cast off 16, and knit the remaining 22 stitches. On the next row, knit 22 stitches, cast on 16 stitches, and knit the remaining 22.

Continue to knit all stitches on both sides until your scarf is long enough. Cast off, and weave in ends. As an optional step, crochet a shell edge onto both short ends. For that, pick up a crochet hook size 4mm. Secure the yarn onto the edge of your scarf, skip two stitches, and into the third, triple crochet five times. Skip two, and single crochet into the next stitch. Continue like this through the short edge, and repeat on the other end.

My Keyhole Scarf is nearly two meters long, as I wanted to wear the scarf in many ways. It works as a traditional scarf, I can wear it loosely around the neck, it doubles as a shawl that stays securely in place, I can even tie it into a cute bow. My only regret is that I didn’t make this a little bit wider and with warmer yarn. Perhaps I’ll use that as an excuse to knit another one next fall!

I hope you’ll enjoy this free Keyhole Scarf pattern. If you make this, I’d love to see your creation. Tag me on IG with #sometimesknits

Heather
