Red Crochet Shawl

Once upon a time, I made a safety blanket cardigan with red acrylic yarn. Turns out I had a bit more than I needed. I used We Love Yarn MegaBall for the cardigan. This acrylic yarn is soft and snuggly. One 400 gram ball holds 1200 meters of yarn. I originally ordered three balls. My cardigan took two, so I had one left over. That, I decided to turn into a shawl with a 5mm hook.

Any yarn will work for this project. I would actually recommend using a cotton for this: it falls heavier than light acrylic, and therefore gives the shawl a more polished look. If you prefer a video tutorial, hop on over to my YouTube where I show you how to crochet this triangle shawl.

This shawl is crocheted from the neck down. To start, chain four, and join to make a circle. Chain four, and into the circle, triple crochet three times. Chain one, and triple crochet four times into the circle. That’s row one.

Work increases in the corners and in the middle. To turn, chain four. Triple crochet twice into the gap between the last stitches on the previous row. Repeat this increase at the beginning of each row.

Chain one, and triple crochet around the stem of the next stitch. Repeat until you reach the one chain gap in the middle. Into the gap, triple crochet two times, chain one, and triple crochet two more times. Chain one, and continue to triple crochet around the stems of the stitches on the previous row.

Once you reach the corner, triple crochet three times into the space that separates the last two stitches. Repeat this increase to end each row.

Chain four to turn, work an increase, and continue to chain one and triple crochet into each stitch, repeating increases in the middle and in the corners.

Repeat these two rows until your shawl is large enough.

Finish with a border. Turn to work on the ridged side. Increases are no longer needed. Chain one, single crochet at the base of the first triple crochet. Into the gap between, double crochet, and into the next stitch, triple crochet. Into the gap between, double crochet, and single crochet into the next stitch. Repeat through until you reach the middle increase.

Into the middle increase’s stitches, double crochet, triple crochet, quadruple crochet into the chain stitch, and then triple crochet and double crochet into the remaining increase stitches. Continue the established picot pattern until you reach the other corner.

Turn to work on the long edge. Single crochet three times into each stitch. Once you reach the corner, cast off, and weave in ends.

I hope you will enjoy this simple shawl. If you make one, I’d love to see it. Use #SometimesKnits to tag me on IG!
